ROAD BIKE
Road is a catch-all term for many different disciplines of cycling and is also a
gateway to other cycling sports such as Track racing and Cyclocross.
Road Bike
Road cycling is best described as a lifestyle sport. It satisfies those who crave competition, it provides camaraderie for those looking for something to belong to, it provides immeasurable health benefits and, by traveling to races in scenic locales and exploring the countryside on training rides, it provides a means to experience the world.
One might attend their first race and find out they are a natural, of course they could also find out they have a long way to go. Riders learn that cycling is both a fun and rewarding pastime, and a personal journey. A cyclist then begins to ride more, may find a coach, begins to attend a weekly training ride or race. They notice they begin to fly up the hills with a little less effort and take corners with more speed. The improvements are measurable and it encourages the cyclist to take the sport a bit more seriously.
The discipline of road cycling includes both individual events such as Time Trials or Hill Climb events and mass start events such as Road races, Criteriums, and Gran Fondos. It also can serve as a gateway into other disciplines of cycling such as Track, Cyclocross and Gravel and the growing world of Indoor Cycling.
Road cycling can serve the competitive cyclist through testing one’s fitness and skills. The excitement of road racing is that often its not just how an individual preforms but how a team preforms to its strengths and supports its riders. Strategy is key and knowing when to stay with the pack or when to take off in a break can make or break a performance.
The beauty of road cycling though many will argue is that it is not only competitive but recreational as well. A road bike can take us on amazing journeys to every corner of the world giving us a much different perspective of it at the same time.
Regardless of the type of cyclist you are whether young or old, competitive or recreational, a veteran or brand new to the world of cycling; road cycling can have something to offer. The SCA encourages you to seek out one of your many local Road Cycling Clubs to see how you can begin to experience the world of Saskatchewan Road Cycling
All these great successes have one thing in common: they began with giving the sport a try.
