The Performance Cycling Program seeks to utilize Saskatchewan resources of people, land, clubs, coaches, technology, talent, and industry to support Saskatchewan youth pursuing competitive cycling dreams towards the National and International level.

The Performance Cycling Program is SCA’s provincial high-performance cycling program focused on the Olympic cycling disciplines within Saskatchewan.

The Performance Cycling Program delivers High Performance, Performance, and Development programs to encourage excellence in sport and help Saskatchewan targeted athletes develop to their full potential.  Participants are typically in the ‘Train to Train’ through to the ‘‘Learn to Win’ stages of the Long Term Athlete Development model (LTAD).

PCP is intended for cycling athletes ages 13 – 22 (Under 23) during the year of competition, feeds from the Saskatchewan population and local cycling clubs, and is led by the SCA Provincial Coach(s).

During the year with the program athletes are offered opportunities to develop with enhanced services including,

  • Training Camps
  • High-caliber Competition Projects
  • Certified Coaching
  • Educational Opportunities, and more.

Our Goals

The long-term goal is to produce a consistent stream of cycling talent to compete in Olympic cycling disciplines, and to achieve podium performances nationally.  Athletes in this program will channel into National team programs and cycling trade teams based on their performances at the national level.  The program will utilize and apply the Cycling Canada Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) as a guide and reference for development and implementation.

Our Vision

Create a provincially and nationally recognized talent development program that prepares athletes for success in provincial and national high performance programs, by providing the highest level of coaching and training, sport science, competition structure, and athlete support services.  This will result in athletes achieving elite status, measuring themselves against the best in the nation, while maintaining close ties with the local cycling community.

Development Program

The Development Program is aimed at introducing young athletes to competition and structured training in several cycling disciplines.  This program builds upon the fundamental skills of general sport movement and basic cycling learnt in our Club’s grassroots programs and from other sports.  Athletes are introduced to the different aspects of training (physical, motor, technical, mental, nutrition, etc.), and how to compete in multiple cycling disciplines.

This program is the “Train to Train” and “Learn to Compete” stages of the LTAD (LTAD, MTB and BMX) model.  This program works towards facilitating athletic growth and development in multiple cycling disciplines, preparing athletes for competition in age-appropriate Saskatchewan competitions.

Performance Program

The Performance Program is aimed at preparing athletes to compete and win at provincial and national level events, building upon the knowledge and skills gained in the Development Program.  This is the “Train to Compete” stage of the LTAD model.  Athletes who are members of this program have shown competitive results in and outside of Saskatchewan.  The objectives of this program are to increase an athlete’s experience and knowledge through provincial and out-of-province competitions and qualifying for provincial and national teams.  This program is the link from the Development Program to the High Performance Program.

Athletes are expected to complete both training sessions on their own (2-4 times per week) in addition to group training sessions, during the winter (November to April) and the summer (May to October). Athletes can compete in any of the disciplines (Road, MTB, Cyclocross, BMX) and are required to have appropriate bikes for each.

High Performance Program

The High Performance Program is designed to assist Saskatchewan’s best riders by helping to provide them the support and resources needed to compete at the highest levels.  Athletes of this program are members of the provincial team.  The objective of this program is to provide athletes with the opportunities and resources they need to take them to the next higher level of competition.  This program is the “Learn to Win” and “Train to Win” stages of the cycling LTAD model.

This program is tailored to each athlete’s individual needs and works with their private coaches to assist with maximizing their training potential.  Athletes will have access to a winter training facility, Sport Science resources, and individualized training programs.

SCA Provincial Team policies for all teams

  • To be eligible for selection, athletes must be licensed members of the Saskatchewan Cycling Association and must carry the designation ‘Canadian’ on their licenses
  • If a selected rider refuses his or her position on the Provincial Team, the Provincial Coach may at their discretion choose to replace that rider; in the case that another rider is selected, the position will become a ‘Provincial Coach Selection’
  • Projects are partially funded by the Saskatchewan Cycling Association; selected athletes are responsible to contribute a portion of the costs, when racing as Team Saskatchewan
  • Athletes are required to sign all the program documentation prior to taking part in a project
  • Athletes must wear the Provincial Team uniform when competing for Team Saskatchewan
  • Athletes must complete the WADA anti-doping education module “Athlete Learning Program about Health and Anti-Doping (ALPHA)” before taking part in any Provincial Team activities

Athletes may be selected for doping control at any of the races listed above. It is the athlete’s responsibility to become familiar with doping control procedures, and the list of restricted and banned substances. Athletes should consult the Canadian Center for Ethics in Sport for information on restricted substances, therapeutic exemptions, and other doping control matters.
