April 17, 2007
2007 has brought me back out to Victoria for another season of training and racing full-time. This year seems to be taking a step up from last year with my team signing a big title sponsor, La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, and also taking National Trade Team status within the CCA. Training began in January and has been ramping up into the start of the racing season. The mild temperatures on the west coast allow BC to start their racing calendar about two months earlier than the Prairie Provinces.
I kicked off my early season racing with a couple of local races on the island, as well as a Spring Series road race on March 25th, and the Spring Series stage race the following weekend on the mainland. This past weekend was BC Cup #1 in Pitt Meadows. The race, Harris Roubaix, is modeled after the infamous Paris-Roubaix. Each lap was about 10km long and had a 3km section of a gravel dike included that caused a fair bit of chaos. The race was very selective and Rob Britton ended up taking 3rd place to eliminate a Symmetrics podium sweep. Jamie came in 7th with Tyler and myself rounding out the top 15. So far the La-Z-Boy Cycling Team has dominated all of the races on the island, and has proven to be a definite threat in the BC cycling scene.
The team has a versatile 10-man roster with big names like Max Plaxton, Derek McMaster, Rob Britton, Jamie Sparling, and Ryan McNamara. Matt Walker and myself are Saskatchewan’s representatives, and the rest of the team includes Trevor Connor, Ryan Hopping, and Tyler Trace. With the team’s spring campaign looking bright, we will now be shifting our focus towards BC Cup #2 on the 28th and 29th before heading to the Prairies for a few weekends of racing in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
I hope everyone enjoyed their winter, and are excited and motivated for the spring!
See you at the races!
